A neighbor who occasionally has morning coffee with me recently had a sad tale to tell. It was about an incident that happened to her in the middle of a sunny afternoon. She was out shopping at the nearby stores. As she walked on a fairly busy sidewalk she felt herself being shoved to the ground. As she struggled to stand up again she watched as a high school or college age kid ran off with her purse.

Rubbing her bruised knees she looked around for some help. In a few minutes another woman responded and helped her walk to a nearby sandwich shop where they called the police. My neighbor was unable to use her own cell phone since it was in her purse. Using the kind stranger’s cell phone she tried to describe the punk who had knocked her down.

“He was about 5 ‘ 10″ to 6′ tall with a gray jacket. I think his hair was blond and average length” she responded to the 911 operator on the other end of the line.

“First thing I saw of him was his jeans and tennis as he ran off with my purse” she added.

They took the name and address of the sandwich shop and said someone will be sent out right away.

She next called her daughter to come pick her up. The stranger asked if she’d be ok now and she thanked her for all the help and said goodbye. The sandwich shop waitress brought her a cup of coffee and said it was “a freebie” under the circumstances. Her daughter arrived and she related the entire incident to her. “I would have had my mini-stun gun in my hand if it had been even close to dark.”

They discussed how much the crime rate had gone up till the officer arrived. After taking all her information he mentioned she should close her checking account,

notify her Visa and MasterCard account holders. She realized horrified that “The punk has my address and all my work information.”

“I wish I’d had my stun gun out and given the little creep a good jolt.”

It was unlike her to feel such anger. She’d only had $7.00 in cash having safety in mind. She tried to smile as she vehemently told her daughter, “I didn’t want to carry cash for safety purposes. Ha ha, I wish he had a couple twenties instead of my complete identity.”

Might as well take home a couple subs for lunch while we’re here. Patting her jacket pocket she ascertained that her stun gun was still there and they ordered, thanked the waitress for her help and her daughter took her home. “From now on when I’m walking alone it’ll be in my hand and ready for any punk who comes along. She held up the mini-stun gun that fit so easily into her pocket. When I sense someone walking behind me – it better be a honest individual – or zap!”

“Mom, I’m surprised you even own a stun-gun much less want to use it with such anger. But I’d rather see you hurt someone than have someone hurt you.”

She gave her mom a big hug and went home after sharing lunch and more conversation about the crooks of the world and how they’re getting bolder than ever.

In a well lit grocery store a block from my apartment I shopped for eggs and yogurt. One of those sensations of being watched came over me. Proceeding through the check out lane the feeling grew stronger. Directly behind me a young guy of about eighteen with peach fuzz and a totally harmless appearance was checking out with one loaf of cheap store brand white bread.

On the way out the door I patted my jeans pocket to assure myself my “protection” was readily accessible. I stopped at the pay phone near the exit door and pretended to be scrounging for a couple quarters to make a call. He sauntered out the door seeming to be in no particular hurry in stark contrast to other shoppers rushing home to dinner. I waited five minutes before exiting the store.

My apartment was only two blocks away. As soon as I hit the sidewalk I glanced around and sure enough he was walking about fifteen paces behind me. I felt threatened and instead of walking the two blocks home, I stopped on the well-lit corner and waited for the bus. It was rush hour and I felt fairly safe although he and I were the only ones at the bus stop. I made sure he knew I was alert by staring rudely at him as five long minutes went by. He didn’t make a move towards me.

Then the bus came and I relaxed since it made me feel safe. But as the bus door opened the guy lunged towards me, grabbed my purse and tried to wrench it out of my hand. I lifted my right hand pulling my unobtrusive stun gun out of my jeans pocket. He never saw what hit him. The Firefly may be small but it’s mighty powerful. When I zapped a jolt to his forearm he collapsed in a heap on the sidewalk.

The bus driver called 911 and watched the temporarily helpless kid lying on the ground until the police came. Without my compact stun gun the story would have ended differently. The thief would have run off with my purse and gone on to victimize another person.

An unexpected aftermath was the reaction of one elderly lady on the bus. She stuck her head out the window and complained cause she was going to be late. Apparently she didn’t comprehend that she could be the next victim. The bus driver diplomatically told her to shut up or get off his bus…

Anyone with a daughter in high school or college knows she may be a target for perverts. Of course it’s a smaller percentage being harmed than it would seem as you hear the news of a kidnapping or murder every day. She can’t take a gun to class or she’ll be the one in jail. Pepper spray is a wonderful way to disable a perv without killing him. People will actually consider his safety in the event he is the one harmed.

In some states, pepper spray is illegal when carried by an individual who is not a police officer. An unrealistic law – why should the good guys be unprotected. We are left with one other good solution to endangered normal people. The whistle. Nowadays with car alarms simply being ignored cause they go off so easily and a scream misinterpreted and no one pays attention to someone being dragged into a car. But only a deaf person can ignore the electronic pocket whistle.

If you choose to carry one of these handy little protective devices, you can buy one for less than twenty dollars. Your daughter doesn’t even have to lift it to her lips, it goes off at the touch of a button and continues to screech until she removes her hand.

Police detectives give lectures on personal safety and advise that a perp will always pick on the most vulnerable looking person. If the crook is going to rob someone he’s not going to go after the guy who is six feet tall and built like a boxer. He’s not as likely to choose the woman who walks with confidence and looks around as she goes – indicating that she’s aware of the possibility of being robbed or worse. He’s going to wait for the slow walking small woman who seems unaware of anything around her.

Just as pack animals will wait for a weak old antelope to lag behind the herd, or a young calf antelope who can’t run as fast yet, the human predator will choose a victim who seems like he or she will be easy to overcome and rob – or worse.

So talk to your daughters about walking in pairs, being alert and buy them the biggest loudest electronic whistle you can find.

Pepper spray does have a permanent place in my handbag. Then recently I read about a woman who was so scared she dropped her pepper spray and watched as it rolled out of reach. She lost heratm card, her charge cards and a checkbook with her name and address on it. The perp got all that – and away. The charge cards and checking account could be cancelled but since she and her husband just bought a new house, they weren’t in a position to move. Even if they wanted to, the housing market is at a standstill. (Thank you very much – gluttons on Wall Street).

While pepper spray is effective in most cases – you have to be able to keep cool and spray it fast. Women rely on it since they really don’t want to shoot anyone. That’s fine. But what if someperp is trying to take your car with your baby sleeping in the back seat. Few people leave kids in the car while they run into the grocery store but sometimes a nut case with nothing to lose puts a gun on a driver at a stop sign. Incidents of carjacking are on the rise. If you’re the driver you want to have a stun gun readily available in your pocket.

If you can pull it out fast as he pulls you out of the driver’s seat, you can disable him before he knows what hit him. His body goes out of control, he drops his gun and with luck you and the baby are safe. You can even practice pulling the stun gun out of your pocket quickly. That’s what the lawmen and outlaws did to prepare for a shoot out in the Wild Wild West.

I wouldn’t hesitate for a nanosecond if some creep was about to drive off with my child strapped into her car seat. Some of these jerks are actually encouraged by the video game called “Grand Theft Auto.” This is the game where a driver chases down some woman alone and leaps out of his car to steal her purse. It may be “only a game” as I’m told by my relatives who want to justify playing it. Nice topic for a game played by erratic teens. It’s so popular – they have made a “Grand Theft Auto 2.”

I won’t bore anyone with a lecture on violence and how our society in general and tv and movies specifically encourage people to think about the possibility. Sure the well adjusted teens know it’s a game. But, how many maladjusted teens are out there. Those who are inclined to be violent are incited by these types of games and shows.

They are however, good for the stun gun and pepper spray manufacturers. I’ve bought one of each and would not hesitate for a second to use them vigorously on anyone who tried to hurt me or my kids…

Remember all you perps out there, I’m not the only mom out here who may be inclined to do violence against YOU!

One evening my husband Clark went out jogging before dinner. He is six foot two and a big burly guy. I’m boiling pasta and rolling meatballs on the kitchen counter when I hear him come in. He wasn’t gone as long as usual. I called out something like – hey babe – the food isn’t ready yet what are you doing back so soon. He walks in with a bloody gash on the side of his head. OMG!

I sat him down on a kitchen chair and went for a cloth to put on the wound. He was cussing and dialing 911 when I got back with it. He was mad at himself cause it was the one time he forgot his cell phone. A guy in the park had grabbed a woman jogger and was trying to drag her off – somewhere off the path and Clark being the decent guy he is tried to stop him. Well he stopped him but not without a cut on the head for his trouble.

The police arrived fast and Clark explained what had happened. The woman who was attacked had called a friend and gave Clark her name before having the friend drive her home. She was really grateful my husband came along when he did. You know, I have one of those excellent alarms that I carry when I’m out alone but my husband is such a big guy who would think he could have used one that day. The police said they were going over to take down a statement from the woman who was attacked and were going to suggest she get one too.

Isn’t anybody safe any more these days? I wish it was like on the old Andy Griffith reruns where everyone was nice to everyone else. The world seems to be so full of perverts that before we know it, they’ll outnumber us good guys. I’m buying Clark one of those alarms whether he likes it or not. The cost is so small that everyone should have one, especially teen aged girls.

I was out jogging the other afternoon and you know how you can suddenly sense someone is watching you. Well I got a chilling feeling and looked back to see a six-foot guy walking fast behind me. He was just scruffy looking but I couldn’t be sure he wasn’t just out for a walk like I was out for a jog. It was

full daylight and I glanced around to see if there were any other people in the park. I saw a few mothers with little kids playing at a swing set and I left the path and went over to join them. The scruffy looking dude walked on along the path never even glancing my way. I told the two women why I had come over to join them and we chatted for a few minutes.

One woman named Jenny showed me a small black item she carried in her pocket, wherever she goes she said. It is a siren type alarm that she can set off if she is in any kind of danger. It emits a screeching siren sound that can be heard about a fourth of a mile away. Anyone would recognize it as a call for help and she said usually she is never more than a half a block away from other people. It makes her feel secure especially since she has little kids.

I checked it out on the Internet and they are sold at several reliable web sites. They don’t even cost very much and I’m gonna order one. I’m gonna use PayPal cause I’m really careful about my information online. PayPal doesn’t give any company your credit card numbers although they have to take down your address to mail the alarm to you. I’m only gonna go jogging with my girl friend or my husband until the alarm gets delivered. I never saw the same scruffy dude in that park again but there’s a 50/50 chance he was stalking after me or any other jogger he could find all alone.

Recently an eighty-two year old woman was walking her little Shih Tzu dog when a pit bull attacked. This particular pit bull was viscious enough to knock the dog’s owner to the ground when she tried to protect her small dog. She bravely positioned herself in a fetal position around her dog to prevent the pit bull from killing the smaller dog.

The pit bull then continued the aggressive attack, ripping parts of the woman’s hair and scalp right off her head. An eleven year old boy rushed to her aid and pulled the Shih Tzu away but couldn’t help the lady. Someone called for help and the responding police officer found the dog continuing the attack. Finally the owner of the persistent pit bull arrived and brought the beast under control by tackling him.

The end result of this nightmare situation that happened at 5PM well before dark was the elderly woman being taken to the hospital and the pit bull and his owner’s other dog were taken to a County Animal Shelter. What are the laws on this type of attack? If it is the first attack by any individual dog it used to be that the animal was given a second chance. What responsibility does the owner of such an animal have. The owner claimed the pit bull escaped the

fenced yard he kept him in. Does that absolve him of blame?

These types of attacks with innocent pets and people being attacked and even killed by trained attack dogs is increasing. In response products are being offered for sale to protect these helpless victims. There are sprays especially developed for the purpose of repelling animals rather than human attackers. For $14.99 you can buy a canine repellent small enough to be taken along as you walk your dog. The world is becoming an ever more dangerous place and such stringent measures are sadly necessary.

We can only hope this elderly woman and her little pet survive although recovery from the horror of that day will remain with them forever.
